Back to Back 5ks? OK!!!!

What an amazing day!  I had the pleasure of not only running a 5k for myself, but doing another 5k with a good friend.  Which opens up a whole different dimension of running!

Let's back pedal for a moment.  I had an incredible weekend.  Filled with lots of love, and some great family time.  Tiff found out about a triathlon for kids aged 3-13, so we talked to Christopher about it. There's three triathlons throughout the summer, if a child completes all three they get a Fitbit. Neat!  What a great prize to help these little athletes keep going!  Well, Christopher thought it was pretty cool too!  So the cherry on top of my weekend, is that now Christopher wants to train for a triathlon!  So watch out world, come 2020 we're looking to crush it!

Let's talk about today's runs, shall we?  One of my very good friends, Sam, wants to get into running as well, so I challenged him to do his first 5k this week.  There's a NYRR virtual 5k for Pride, what better reason to get out crush 5k?  I told him that we would absolutely go at his pace, because I will have already run 5k.

So, last night I pulled up my past runs to try and find a route that takes 5k from my door to his.  This morning differed from my usual run because I was coordinating with another human being.  Most normal functioning adults don't want to get up at 4:30 to start their day, I can appreciate that.  So I scheduled to meet up with Sam at 9:30.  I should've specified that I would meet him at his place, but I assumed he would just.... know that?.... Again, not used to coordinating with another person. So there are still some kinks I need to work out in my communications.  Well, off I went to meet Sam, taking a long circuitous route around town.  It was a good run, because I spent most of the time thinking about future runs.  I'm VERY excited for my 5k in exactly one week!  I'm even more excited for all of the runs after that.  I'm excited to keep pushing my limits, and seeing the rewards.  I'm the MOST excited for this new aspect of running.  Helping other people achieve their goals is SUCH an incredible feeling.

So my first 5k was just for me, and it was awesome.  Just the excitement that I have for getting Detroit ready, and seeing what I can do.  The first 5 went by without too much struggle, I didn't really push it because I knew I had another 5 after.  The second 5, was the best 5!  Being able to push myself for a bit more, while encouraging a friend to push themselves beyond what they think they can do?  Amazing!

Honestly, I had so much fun.  It's easy to have a smile on your face when you're cheering a friend on.  It made the 5k breeze by, and that's awesome for my second leg.  Sam may tell a different story, but he's probably lying.

The reason that today is so amazing though, is that I have an even better tomorrow to look forward to.  Tomorrow Christopher begins his own quest for a triathlon, and I get to cheer him on the whole way!

Today is a great day!

Weekly Recap

Hard not to be happy with this week's runs. After burning my legs pretty badly on last Sunday's kayak adventure (which was sensational!). I took Sunday and Monday off from running, and more then made up for it Tuesday! Early morning run, followed by a lunch run for a total of 19k... on a Tuesday.  Followed by a 13k run Wednesday, taking back Meloche Hill segment. Hadn't realized I lost it, but it's given me some extra motivation to hit the segments. Ending the week at 62.2 km ran, bringing the annual total to 1,065.6 kms. Which is back on track for the annual stretch goal of 2,022. Got one bike ride in with Jeremia this week. Happy to be out on the road, but will hopefully have my mountain bike situation sorted soon. Here's to another active week next week!

Running in Costumes is Hard

Apparently if I wait till Monday, I'll have my Weekly Performance Assessment from WHOOP. Which is a little more insight into the past week running. I might have to try this Monday thing out for a bit. Today's WPA, strain was overreaching and sleep fell short... preach WHOOP, preach. I'm still not 100% and the runs I am doing are kicking my ass. Going to sleep in a little tomorrow and run after the kids go to school, so hopefully we can get that recovery up. After being sick and getting side lined with that for a week, I've been struggling balancing charity runs and training runs. Which in and of itself seems like an insane statement after re-reading it. I've had alot of fun, and definitely felt the support from my home town, doing these costumed runs. They've come with different and unique challenges, and hopefully some lessons learned.  Here's to finding fulfillment in this week's runs. 33.9km ran last week, 755.2km this year.

Seems Like a Good Balance

I tried posting on Mondays to include my WHOOP data, but it's all been "great effort, sleep could use improvement" and Monday's are busy. I tried writing last week's post a few times, but kept getting side tracked.  I've officially kiboshed the marathon training plan until July. Trying to train for a marathon, do charity runs, cross train, do yoga and do things with my children was ambitious.  Looking forward to pushing for a four hour marathon starting July 24th. I've come to discover that Thursdays are my best PR days. I don't know why, but I tend to have my best runs on Thursdays.  Going to wrap up June with some morning runs for me, and some evening runs for charity. Seems like a good balance.
